What we do-
Located in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Northern Area Health Education Center (AHEC) serves 47 counties, many of which are medically underserved and rural. Armed with the mission of improving the distribution, supply and quality of healthcare professionals throughout the state, Northern AHEC works to accomplish this by assisting with recruitment of healthcare professionals, promotion of healthcare careers, support of rural training sites, continuing education and technology-driven initiatives. Northern AHEC partners with communities, hospitals, and educational institutions to achieve these objectives. The following are some examples of Northern AHEC’s activities:

Supporting health professional’s training in rural clinic sites. This may include coordination of the training, a housing subsidy, and community orientation.

Partnering with K-12 schools to develop and implement healthcare occupations as a career pathway.

Providing assistance to health professionals for conferences and training for continuing education opportunities.

Assisting with technology to healthcare professionals and students, faculty, medical residents and staff to provide access for rural medicine.

Michigan State University initiated the development of three AHECs across the state in 2003. Since the inception of these AHECs, Michigan has joined hundreds of other AHECs nationwide with similar missions.
