A Healthcare Education
Offering the Field of Healthcare to Tomorrow's Professionals

The support of students is a top priority for NAHEC.  This is accomplished through health professional education programs and K-12 schools being encouraged to include programs that are vital to students’ learning in a rural region.  NAHEC facilitates quality educational experiences consistent with curricular goals.

Acting as a link between all levels of education, various community organizations, and medical facilities, NAHEC has the capacity to reach out to thousands of students and health professionals.  Developing programs and partnering with others allows students and health professionals to have enhanced rural clinical experiences, access to technology, and education about the health career pathway.

K-12
Increasing the awareness of health career opportunities is the main goal of NAHEC when developing programs for K-12.  “The Great Hospital Adventure” puppet program is presented to K-3 students across northern Michigan.  The program promotes health career awareness and encourages healthy behaviors for children ages four to nine.  The classroom materials and activities emphasize non-traditional gender roles and multi-cultural images.

NAHEC also supports and promotes HOTT- Health Opportunities for Today and Tomorrow which is a resource for middle and high school students interested in exploring health care opportunities.

NAHEC is a member of the Health Care Pathway Advisory Council.  This council was created to initiate programs for elementary, middle and high school students to enhance the health career pathway.  Career fairs and health and science explorations are among the programs that are created and implemented by the council.

College and Medical School
Health professional students enrolled in college and medical school utilize NAHEC as a resource to locate housing, be placed in rural rotations, and have improved access to technology.  Also, before completing a rural rotation, NAHEC has community information available for students.  This assists them in becoming familiar with the area and to be aware of what services and recreational activities are available in the community. By removing barriers such as housing and technological gaps, the experience for the college health professional is improved.
