A Northern Michigan Lifestyle
Enjoying a Healthy Community and Environment

A lifestyle in Northern Michigan means a lifestyle of community and belonging.  Amongst the picturesque lakes and trees, residents and visitors are able to enjoy an abundance of recreational activities.

Training health professionals to practice in a rural region also means exposing them to the benefits of living in a place like Northern Michigan.  Northern AHEC has compiled information about each town to assist health professionals in their exposure to rural medicine.  This might include a list of local shopping centers, banks, churches, or the nearest ski hill.  Northern AHEC is here to maximize the health professional's experience in rural Northern Michigan.

The Environment
Whether it be kayaking or snowshoeing, Northern Michigan prides itself on the environment that enriches recreational activities.  Northern AHEC coordinates events and groups that help expose health professionals and students to the incredible lifestyle.  Residents and visitors enjoy camping, skiing, ice climbing  or just walking along the beaches of the Great Lakes.

• Wilderness Medical Society/Club
In conjunction with the Upper Peninsula Health Education Center (UPHEC)/MSU College of Human Medicine’s U.P. campus, Northern AHEC has established a Wilderness Medicine Club for those health professionals and individuals interested in outdoor medicine.  The group participates in activities that allow them to explore Northern Michigan, while learning about different components of wilderness medicine.  Speakers and physicians will often attend the event to discuss various topics.  This is a new club, and is open to members at no charge.  The first activity was a kayak adventure on Lake Superior.  Future activities will be posted on this web site.  If you have any questions or would like to be a member, please contact NAHEC at (906) 225-6920.

For those health professionals that are serious about wilderness medicine and would like to access to the Wilderness Medicine Society medical journals, an international club exists and Northern AHEC is currently recruiting members to be a part of a student interest group.  For more information on the Wilderness Medicine Society, please visit www.wms.org or contact NAHEC at (906) 225-6920.
