Here's To Your Health!  Michigan Technological Students Attend Programs and Take Tour of Portage Health System

In connection with Northern AHEC's Director Carolyn Weissbach "Here's to Your Health" Perspectives class at Michigan Technological University (MTU), two recent programs and a field trip to the local hospital took place providing opportunities to the community and to encourage youth to consider careers in the health professions.  The fieldtrip was a guided tour of Portage Health System in Hancock, Michigan.  It included forty undergraduate students, many of them interested in pursuing health professions.  They viewed and asked questions about the facility including areas such as the Family Birthing Center and the Portage Pointe senior living facility.

Dr. David Luoma, Patti Coply, Community Administrator, T.J. Anderson (4th Year Medical Student) and Tom Thornton (MTU Senior recently accepted in the MSU Medical program) presented an information session on October 25, 2005 for two of the Here's to Your Health classes.  Informational packets were distributed and student questions about the medical school admission process, what it's like to be a physician/nurse and hwy professionals chose their fields were posed.

The People Speak: World Health, Poverty and Hunger

The 42 undergraduates in the Here's to Your Health classes organized, publicized and implemented this presentation which focused on a September 2005 United Nations gathering of world leaders to develop goals.  This public forum was offered on the evening of October 18 in the Houghton and attended by 90 individuals including students, faculty and community members.  Funding was provided bu the United Nations Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, League of Women Voters Education Fund and the Northern AHEC.
